The Doctors at Southwest Veterinary Hospital

I was born and raised in Kansas. My uncle, a small animal veterinarian living in Massachusetts, offered me a summer job at his hospital prior to me graduating from high school. That experience changed my life. He inspired me to follow in his footsteps.

I received my veterinary degree from Kansas State University and accepted an associate veterinarian position at this hospital after graduation.
I was very comfortable with Bakersfield’s friendly atmosphere and impressed with quality of the staff at Southwest, so when offered a partnership in the practice in 1980, I gladly accepted.
I have been a veterinarian at this practice for over 30 years and am now referred to as the senior partner. As they say, time flies.

In my free time I enjoy playing golf, traveling, and exploring the internet. The career I have chosen is a noble and satisfying profession. I am still excited about going to work every day, and find the profession as challenging and rewarding today as the first time I put on a stethoscope.

Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 1998. I grew up in Bucyrus, Kansas, the youngest of five children.

I'm married to Dorothy who I met in California, and we have one child Olivia.

We have two Black Labradors named Dillon and Betty, both love riding in the car and swimming in their pool.

My interests include home improvement projects, woodworking, golf and spending time with my family.

I love my profession and feel fortunate to work with a great group of people.

Grew up south of Kansas City in a small town (pop. 4000) called Butler, Missouri. My family still lives there.

Graduated from the University of Missouri in 1974 and moved to Bakersfield to be closer to snow skiing.

I have 2 longhaired dachshunds: Betty and Glenda. My hobbies include golf, snow skiing, hiking, playing the piano, and collecting wine.

Every day of practice is interesting, challenging, and never the same. I enjoy seeing puppies, kittens and tortoises.

I graduated from UC Davis Veterinary School in 2004. Since then, I have been working at Southwest and Stiern Veterinary Hospitals. I enjoy seeing cats, dogs and pocket pets. I have a special interest in Radiology and Surgery.

I met my husband in Vet School. We married in 2003 and have since had 2 beautiful children. Ava is 3 years old and Sophia is 1 and ½. My family also includes 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 2 rats. My husband is currently practicing as a large animal veterinarian.

I feel very fortunate to practice veterinary medicine in a community that has given me such great opportunities in both my professional and personal life.

Born and Raised in Bakersfield. I attended undergraduate school at Bakersfield College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before I Attended Veterinary School at University College in Dublin, Ireland and Graduated in 2002.

I grew up with Stiern Veterinary Hospital as our family vet, so I suppose that's where I first became interested in veterinary medicine.

I worked at Stiern Veterinary Hospital from 2004 to 2006 and left to work for the Kern County Animal Shelter from

2007 until June 2008. While there, I was awarded the U.C. Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Fellowship for 2007-2008. I have a great interest in rescue and shelter medicine and I also enjoy working with reptiles and ferrets.

I teach Clinical Pathology for Veterinary Technicians at Bakersfield College in the fall, and in my spare time I enjoy traveling, gardening and reading.

I have a little Whippet named Monkey who keeps me on my toes.

The Doctors at Stiern Veterinary Hospital

I'm a native of Kansas City area and received my BS and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Kansas State University. After graduating from the veterinary college in June of 1980, I moved to Bakersfield to join several prior Kansas State graduates who were already practicing with the Stiern and Southwest Veterinary Hospitals. In 1984 I became a partner in the practice.

I have always had a strong interest in the biological sciences and a love for the pets that I had while growing up, so veterinary medicine has proven to be a very rewarding career for me. After more than 29 years as a veterinarian, I still enjoy the challenge and satisfaction that treating your pets provides me.

Over the years I have had a number of cats and dogs and I presently have two dogs. Shorty is a Shelty mix, and Ranger is a Blue Tick Coon hound.

Outside of my career as a veterinarian, I am the proud parent of two wonderful college-age kids, Nick and Becca. Since they live out of town much of the time, I enjoy opportunities to spend time with them when possible. I like to stay active and I enjoy many outdoor activities such as bicycling, skiing, fly-fishing, hiking backpacking, travel and photography.

I was born in Merced, CA at Castle Air Force Base. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Except for brief stretches in Japan, Okinawa, Maine and Washington, I have lived my life in the San Joaquin Valley. I attended undergraduate school at Merced Junior College and California State University, Fresno. I attended veterinary school at Washington State University in Pullman, WA and graduated in 1992.

Although my original interest was in a mixed practice, I really like small animal medicine. I see pocket pets, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, occasional goat and pot belly pigs, within limits, in addition to our regular clientele, dogs and cats. I feel confident treating trauma in reptiles and birds but not metabolic diseases.

I currently teach classes at Bakersfield College in the Registered Veterinary Technician Certification program. In my spare time I like to read, knit, and hike. I am currently on the Bakersfield SPCA board of directors and volunteer there. I am a firm advocate for pet over population control and believe everyone is needed to make a difference.

I currently have a cat (Pyewacket) and 2 dogs (Chuck, a mastiff cross, and Hank a basset hound). I have a soft spot for hounds and a steadfast rule about no more than three of each species.

I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and was reared on a farm in southeastern Indiana. I received a BS in Education from Purdue, spent 6 months in New Zealand as a Farm Youth Exchangee, and spent 5+ years in the Air Force as a Ground Communications Officer. I received my DVM degree from Purdue and moved to California. I practiced small animal (dogs and cats) medicine in the greater Los Angeles area until moving to Bakersfield in September 2006.

I am happily married to my wife Joan. We enjoy traveling and spending time with our extended family. We have 2 cats – Rosie and Dot. I enjoy tool collecting, woodworking and summer barbecuing.

I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California attending Stockdale High School. I grew up around horses, cats, and dogs and always knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian. I did my undergraduate work at Occidental College in Los Angeles. In 2010, I completed my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

I met my wonderful husband, Paul, at Occidental and we have been happily married since 2007. We have two beagles, Jackson and Jewel, who are currently the center of our lives.

I started practicing believing that I was going into equine medicine, but my interests have shifted over the last year and now I am thrilled to be seeing your dogs and cats.

Outside of the office, I love to horseback ride, scrapbook, read and travel.
